| George's Last Day as an Intern |
|
George O'Malley took his intern exams over again, but still doesn't have the results. Richard Webber assures him that they will have the results soon and that he will let him know as soon as they arrive. Still, George is wondering. Lexie Grey tells him they'll go to Joe's after work to celebrate because she's sure he passed. And if not, what better way to forget than to get drinks. Chief reminds everyone, "Apparently some people thought I was kidding last week when I said that no one was going to be able to hang out in their favorite specialty anymore. I WASN'T. Junior residents do not specialize. So all the requests to send you back to the special place where your true heart lives can end now. Dr. Bailey makes the assignments, do not - I repeat do not, harang her." It is what it is. Cristina is sent to the clinic, Meredith heads to cardio, and Alex and Izzie are sent to the "pit" in the E.R. George is Meredith's intern for the day and they soon find they're young patient running through the hospital wreaking havoc. The young boy threatens to pull the fire alarm unless they promise he doesn't have to have surgery. Obviously they can't keep this promise and the alarm sounds. Looks like these two have quite a task on their hands. George soon relates to this young boy. When the two try to draw the boy's blood he asks if it's going to hurt. George quickly answers "yes!" It will hurt for like 3 seconds and then it will be fine he explains. Then taking off his jacket, George offers to let the child see how it works. Meredith procedes to show how to draw the blood and George gives the boy a play-by-play explanation of the procedure. Suddenly the patient is more comfortable and allows his blood to be drawn. George finds the young patient's mother in the hall, distraught about how she's not good at this. He consoles her explaining that no one is. No one knows what to do when their child needs heart surgery. He assures her it will all be fine in the end and that she is doing a fine job. George goes to find the Chief to ask a favor. He wants this young boy to be able to go into the O.R. to see what it's like before he goes in. He says it's the best way to avoid having to sedate the child and strap him down. This way, he'll feel at ease and cooperate. Chief is hesitant, but allows it only after they set up the parameters on what kind of surgery he can look in on. Only one with no blood showing, the patient is sedate and nothing is too traumatic for the young boy. George fits the boy with his little hat and mask, but the boy is a little nervous still. George tells him he will be fine and he'll love seeing how everything works. It's like looking at a "little George" as you see this young boy ready to go in. The two walk into the O.R. and find Derek Shepard and Mark Sloan performing skull surgery on a patient who's face is peeled back from forehead to nose. Quickly realizing they are in the wrong O.R., George ushers the boy out and makes him promise to never tell anyone about seeing the man with no face. They walk into the right O.R. and the boys says, "This is boring." "Yours will be boring, too," George says. "I want to go back to the other room," says the boy. The boy goes to surgery and all is well.
After the shift, Lexie is consoling George outside, planning their drinks at Joe's when the Chief walks up with an envelope. It's George's results. Lexie quickly opens the envelope and announces, "You passed!" George grabs the envelope. He can hardly believe it. "I've got to go tell Izzie and Meredith," and he leaves Lexie there alone on the bench. Lexie finally makes her way to Joe's to find George already there with Meredith, Izzie and Crisitna. George motions for her to join them and she nods, then orders her drinks to go have them elsewhere. George hardly even notices that she's gone. |
