| Floods in the Hospital |
|
George O'Malley finally sits down to take his intern exam - again - and the examiner explains that once the seal is broken, he has three hours to complete the exam. George is nervous, but ready. Lexie Grey's been helping him. Just as he goes to break the seal, water begins to leak in from the ceiling. Chief knows he can handle the situation and George puts off the exam, for now to help with the situation. Erica Hahn approaches Callie Torres about her need for privacy in this situation. She doesn't like when people talk and whisper about her. She likes to be private. Callie is a little unsure that she can do that and confides in her good friend Mark Sloan. Knowing Mark, though, he will definitely not be able to keep this quiet. Derek Shepard is faced with a difficult patient who has had chronic pain for 7 years in his head. He has tried everything, done everything and still his pain remains at an "8" on the pain scale. It's more than he can bear. Derek and Cristina take on the challenge trying every test they can think of to determine the cause of his pain to no avail. Surprisingly as they are trying to perform more tests, a cocky Mark Sloan comes in and announces to Derek that Lexie Grey may have an idea of what the cause of the pain is. Due to her remarkable photgraphic memory, she remembers a rare cause of pain from the inside of the nose having hypersensitive nerve endings. Though Derek thinks it's a long shot, Mark pushes his way in to test the theory. Remarkably, Lexie is right and they now have a plan of action to help this poor man who's been suffering for so long.
In the mean time, the flooding in the hospital is escalating. What started out as an isolated incidence, is spreading through the hospital. One particular patient of Alex Karev's seems to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He slips on water in the hallway, gets a leaky room, and though the Chief is bending over backwards for the patient to make him comfortable, it appears that his luck has always turned bad. Alex, disturbed by the man's intense negativity, starts to try to make him feel better by spouting out about all of his hardships recently. The patient appreciates that he's trying to help, but still feels grim that anything good can come of his life, but admits that there is a girl he wishes he could talk to at the grocery store. Miranda Bailey begins to plead with the Chief to move the patients to another hospital until they get the problem under control, but Chief is determined to fix it and contain it. Cristina after finding out that her patient's "pain" is only some nerve endings is determined that she could withstand more pain than him. He must have a low threshold. She checks his vitals, but only half-believes his pain is at an 8 still. She thought maybe he had a slight relief as of late. The man goes on to explain to her the excruciating pain he's had. Then his wife died a year ago and for a while it has numbed the pain. Finally being diagnosed and in the process of grieving, he admits maybe it has been relief. Cristina has little to say to this heart-wrenching story of loss and continues with his labs. Meanwhile, George finds a moment to try again at the test. Lexie is there to help. Chief, again has an emergency need with the flood and calls him away to help. Sloan also offers Lexie a spot to scrub in on the nose surgery. The true (lovesick) friend that she is, refuses to help saying that she needs to help George study instead. This leaves Mark plenty of time to take jabs at a "private-seeking" Erica. Every chance he gets, he teases the two same-sex lovers with crude suggestions and it's more than Erica can handle. Callie is the one she talks to about things and Erica can't stand that Mark is the one Callie confides in. Callie tells Mark to stop with the teasing, but he can't help but play in to Erica's anger.
Erica Hahn begins surgery on her patient who believes his luck can never turn. Things are going routinely, but then she sees a drip from the ceiling. While she and Karev are scrambling to see what is happening, a frantic Miranda Bailey is trying to yell from the observation deck for them to move the patient. They dive over his body in an attempt to shield his exposed abdomen as the ceiling comes crashing in on them. The doctors are fine, but this certainly poses a great threat to a man who believes that nothing can ever go right for him. Bailey is beside herself and goes to tell Chief for herself. Taking a moment for thought, Richard Webber concedes that they need to ship out the surgical patients until they can get the problem solved. "No gloating on the way down the hall," he calls after her and she agrees. While looking hard and closely to make sure all of the ceiling fragments are cleaned out of the insides of their patient, Alex Karev finds something unexpected. In going to speak to the patient and confessing the emergency during the surgery, it is uncovered that they found pancreatic cancer. As the patient begins his grim, sullen, self-loathing, Alex continues to explain. Only because of the strange circumstance of the ceiling cave in and an extra close look led them to find the cancer on his pancreas. Not only that, but they caught it at a stage one, were able to remove it and the man will live with no chemotherapy. Things appear to be looking up for the poor patient. At the end of the day everyone is at Joe's for drinks. Mark sits with Lexie, curious about her photographic memory. He begins quizzing her on the table of elements which she easily relays to the eager doctor. Also, Callie and Erica finally talk again. Callie explains that she processes her stuff out loud, she need to talk to people and Mark is her friend. She gets that Erica is priavate, but she is not. Erica admits that "I think I just hate him because he's seen you naked." Smiles are exchanged. Back at Seattle Grace, the only two left are Richard Webber and George O'Malley. They find a quiet place and George finally sits down for his three-hour intern exam with the Chief there to observe him - after all, today was the last day for Geroge to be an intern. . .
