Big Sloan and Little Grey

Seeking solace from their loss of OR experience the interns discuss how they will be filling the void.  One male intern announces that he’s going to use sex, the three females present quickly decline the offer, including Lexie Grey and Sadie.  Lexie decides, instead, to seek out Mark Sloan to teach her.  Somehow he’s the one who always seems to have faith in her.  She marches up to him and jokingly asks him to teach her about sex, to which he is very flustered.  She tells him she was kidding and asks if she can learn from him today with his surgery.  Miranda Bailey has also taken an interest in Mark’s surgery for the day – he’s rebuilding a woman’s vocal chords in the attempt to restore her speech.  He brings her on board to scrub in and sends Lexie to get a history of the patient.  She can help, but she can’t be in on the surgery.  When they go in to explain the procedure to the patient, she seems less than impressed.  She is sitting in front of her laptop typing away, stopping only briefly to hold up post it notes that say “yes” and “no.”  The husband tries to listen for her, but it is obvious that he is both embarrassed by and frustrated with her behavior.

When Lexie comes to the patients husband later to get some paperwork signed, he explains that his wife has become a blogger – about cancer and such – and it’s all she ever does anymore.  Lexie tries to commend him on the system of communication through the post-its that they’ve achieved, but obviously the quick and abrupt nature of the one word answers his wife gives him leave a lot to be desired on his part.  The words “I love you” on a post-it just seem to lose their meaning.

Sadie, too, needs some place to put her efforts, being surgery free, and she finds herself gravitating toward Callie Torres.  She joins her in the x-ray room to look over the films.  Surprisingly, Sadie knows her stuff when it comes to broken bones.  She begins to point out all that is wrong in the films, looking to Callie to confirm and explain the solutions.  Callie explains, but looking into Sadie’s face becomes flustered and grabs her films and leaves the room.  After all, Sadie is a very attractive woman.

Callie finds her good friend, Mark Sloan, to talk about it.  She thinks that Sadie smiled at her that way, the way that would mean she’s interested.  Mark warns her to stay away – the pretty ones are just trouble.  Still Callie is a little excited about it, though she’s going to try not make too much of it until she’s sure.

In surgery with Mark, Bailey is asking a lot of questions seemingly like she thinks there’s a better way to be doing things.  “You’re a very eager student, Dr. Bailey, very thorough.”  She thinks it’s a compliment.  Watching from the observation deck, Sadie sits down next to Lexie Grey and announces, “I’m not sorry . . .for what we did.  It was extreme, maybe even stupid, but this program?  I mean you should be downthere in that OR, not up here in the nose bleeds and I should be spending my entire day transcribing Karev’s charts because his handwriting is illegible and how’s that teaching?”  She continues and finishes, “The only time they ever bother with us is if they think they can get us in bed.”  Lexie chimes in, “That’s not true. Dr. Sloan took the time to teach me today and that was not about sex.”  Sadie laughs and tells her how she sees how he looks at her.  He totally likes her.  Lexie denies it, but settles a smug little smile at the thought of it.  Down below, Sloan feels like Bailey is on his toes with the questioning.  He tells her she could take over if she thinks he’s not doing a good job.  She reminds him sincerely that she’s trying to learn.  “These residents are running around fighting tooth and nail to cut off a leg.  I mean, what you’ve done here . . you’ve made something where there’s nothing and its thrilling.  I was just trying to learn, that’s all.”  He turns to and thanks her and asks her to participate with him.  She jumps at the chance.

The three go in to the patient after her throat surgery and try to plead with her to try to talk.  The patient won’t try.  When she goes to open up her computer instead, the husband jumps up and shouts, “No!  No more.  No more typing, no more post-its.  No.  Talk to me.  Talk to me dammit.  Talk to me!”  Realizing tensions are high, Bailey offers that they should give her a little time.  Lexie tells the husband to maybe take a walk or something to give her a little more time.  After all, this wasn’t her first time and they’ve had a lot of disappointment before.  He agrees saying “I’ve given her five years of space,” but Lexie stays there with her.

Sadie finds the Chief in the hallway and tries to take fault for what happened.  She pleads that he not take it out on Dr. Yang because she deserves the surgery.  “You know who your father is,” he tells her, “and you know he’s why you’re here, so if I were you, I’d stop worrying about who’s fault the ‘appy’ was and start figuring out what I had to do to make up for it.”  She answers, “Yes sir.”

Lexie closes the computer in front of her patient.  “It’s okay.  Nobody else is here except me and I’m just an intern.  I’m nobody, so you can try and if it doesn’t work, it’s okay.  Just try.” The patient gathers the strength and tries to say hi.  At first it’s just a hhh sound.  Then it’s more of a hi.  Her husband appears and hears her, she tells him “hi.”   He’s never been so happy to hear her.  They cry and hug.

There’s a knock outside Sloan’s door.  It’s Lexie Grey amazed at how he made his patient speak today.  He says nothing, but she lets herself in.  “I respect you.  As a man, as a surgeon, as a teacher, I respect you. So, teach me,” she says and she begins to undress.  She repeats “Teach me,” and undresses some more.  He tries to stop her, but she continues to press.  “Stop,” he pleads, “You’re little Grey and I promised and I’m your teacher.”  “So teach me,” and she presses on until she’s wearing close to nothing.  “Come on,” she asks, “Am I really that bad?”  “No,” Mark crumbles.  He can’t help it. They tumble into bed together.
