1&2 "Dream a Little Dream"
|
All of the doctors are huddled around Miranda Bailey, sitting at the computer asking if it's there yet. "Have they posted it, they were supposed to post it at 4, try hitting the refresh button," and when she's finally sick of hearing it and turns to tell them all off, it's there. The hospital ratings. What ranking does Seattle Grace get among all of the other teaching hospitals? Surely they are in the top five, last time they were three, so surely they're in the top 5, right? Wrong. They scroll down to find themselves at #12! Chief Webber is beside himself. How could he be #12? Now they are far enough down on the list that the hospital across town will get all of their "good" patients and they will get all the leftovers. . . and it's snowing outside with high potential of black ic with lots of car accidents that they won't get in their hospital. The residents are all waiting outside in the cold on the off-chance that by some miracle someone is so near to death near Seattle Grace that they will actually come. Just when they are about to give up on the potential, a limo comes sliding in to the dock. It has obviously been in a terrible accident. Three women in nice dresses come spilling out coverd in blood, but not theirs, their drivers. He flew through the windshield. They managed to pull him out and drive to the hospital. The women are inside trying to reach their husbands to no avail. The women themselves are relatively alright except one who's meory appears to be "resetting" every thirty seconds. She'll need further evaluation. Meanwhile, Erica Hahn is pressing the chief for what ways in which she can be better at teaching the residents. Obviously he doesn't believe she is a good teacher, so she is taking notes on how to be better. Chief, in his desperation to make it good, heads up the critical injuries of the driver, leaving Miranda Bailey to do the paperwork. They do everything they can in surgery, but they were never able to revive the driver. Miranda gets word of three men injured in a limo nearby. Realizing they may be the husbands of their patients', she has the women insist the men be brought to Seattle Grace instead. The ambulance arrives and they quickly ascertain that he has been given a tracheotomy with a ball point pen. Following close behind is Major Hunt, a military surgeon who was at the scene and did what he felt need to be done to save the man's life. Cristina Yang is very impressed and whispers the word "hot"under her breath as the man passes.
This new doctor immediately starting trying to run his own show. He is very involved with the patients and though he has sustained a serious cut to his thigh, he insists on watching "his" patients. One man has had a tracheotomy and as it turns out, his vocal chords have been severed with no chance of speaking again. The other problem-his insurance runs out at midnight tonight. His wife tries to make some calls to find out what is wrong with the insurance and realizes that all of the credit cards have been canceled as well. She is left not knowing what she should do. The story soon unfolds of how this man has been cheating with his wife's best friend, who is also there at the hospital. He lost his job 8 months ago and was afraid to tell her which led to the affair. He really does love her and wrote her a letter in hopes she'll forgive him. The wife, who is hesitant to listen is forced to by Lexie Grey who begins reading it aloud. The wife leaves unsure of what to do. The second man is in critical condition and they are working hard to stabilize him. They move him immediately to the O.R. for surgery, but Chief tells Cristina to take care of Major Hunts leg before she can scrub in. She goes to prep him for staples in his leg, but when she turns around he's already stapling it up himself with no anesthesia. Cristina is again very impressed by this strong rugged man and she leaves to do her surgery. Cristina Yang scrubs in with chief Richard Webber and Erica Hahn. While Erica attends to the patient's heart, Cristina is stitching his intestines. Hahn asks Chief how he suggest she go about changing her teaching style. He suggests talking to her attendings to find out how they work best. So she turns to Cristina looking for an answer. Cristina says she works best by the Socratic method of asking questions as they work. As she's answering, she realizes there is a problem with her stitches tearing, and the patient is not doing well. Erica Hahn points out that she's stitching like it's a heart and for intestines she needs to do differently-which she would know if she worked more on her general surgery skills instead of just working on hearts all of the time. Cristina feels responsible as they finish the surgery knowing that the patient is still in very critical condition. The thrid man has had a spinal injury and cannot feel his legs. After being assessed by Callie Torres and Derek Shepard it is clear that he will never walk again. The abrupt Major Hunt suggest they do an experimental technique of freezing the man in an attempt for him to regain the use of his legs. Derek quickly denies the surgery saying the patient is too old, but Callie is intrigued and starts to read up on the surgery. Though things go a little rough, the surgery is successful (see more here). In all of this mess, Meredith Grey is trying to figure out if a relationship can really last. She follows Cristina outside to talk to her about her fears, but the two get in an argument instead. Cristina goes to walk back into the hospital and slips on some ice landing flat on her back. Before Meredith can help her up, a huge icicle falls stabbing her in the abdomen. Meredith runs for help, but before she gets back, it's Major Hunt who scoops her up and rushes her into the E.R. Cristina is embarrassed and wants Meredith to pull it out and not tell anyone about it. Within minutes, however, Chief Webber is there to witness what's going on. He insists she get x-rays first and send in her interns to attend her. Not only are the interns nervous to be working on her, she's shouting orders and realizing that they really don't know what they're doing. Why don't they? They've never had the chance. She always does everything for them. Realizing her errors in teaching, Dr. Hunt soon takes over the treatment. Leaning in close as if he's going to kiss her, he reaches down and yanks the huge icicle out of her abdomen. He stitches her up and talks with her about joining him in the thrill of medicine like he does it. Raw, out on the line of duty where you can't control the elements and you do what you can to save lives. She learns that the patient she did surgery on, has died and feels responsible. He tells her that the best thing you can do is learn from your mistakes and move forward to be better the next time. Chief Webber comes to check on her, interrupting the two. He says he's asked around about Hunt and offers him a job at Seattle Grace. Though flattering, the Major is pleased to finish out his service in the military and Chief leaves. Hunt turns around and closes the blinds before grabbing Yang by the hair and kissing her. "I don't even know you," she says. "So!" and he's gone just as suddenly as he came. Richard Webber is still very upset about the ratings. In talking with Derek Shepard, he blames Meredith for him going "soft." He's not sure if he can handle having her at the hospital with his history with her mother. Chief pulls the entire staff into the conference room. He is ashamed of the ratings and is holding everyone responsible. He lets them all know that no one's job is secure and that they are all going to be under scrutiny from now on. more from this episode . . . |

The episode begins with Meredith Grey standing on Derek Shepards land. All of her candles laid out in the house she built. Soon all the candles burn out and the time presses on before she finds herself back at Seattle Grace. Cristina Yang tells Meredith that Derek has been in a car accident. He tried to swerve around a car to avoid the accident, but wrapped his car around a tree. Cristina holds her back as she keeps asking, "Where is he? Where is Derek?" and Crisitina cautions that she's going to need to be strong. She pushes past the doctors and stares at a bloody Derek lying on the gurney. Miranda Bailey is trying to resuscitate him, but you see the line go flat and she mouths the word "time of death." Meredith screams "Noooo!" then wakes up from this frightening dream. Meredith meets up with Cristina on rounds and tells her that she keeps having that dream that Derek dies in a car accident. She's worried it's a bad sign, but she's trying to "lean into the fear," and wants to ask Derek to move in with her. Cristina keeps trying to change the subject as she is much more concerned about working at a second rate hospital (#12 in the nation) than the silly relationship issues of Meredith. When the three women patients come into the E.R., Meredith is struck by how cute it is that these women still love their husbands after all these years. Maybe fairy tale endings do come true.
Meanwhile, Derek is noticing that Rose is giving him the brush off. She drops something off at the nurses' station where Sloan and Shepard are chatting and very obviously ignores Derek, but remembers to talk to Mark Sloan. She walks away and Derek comments that he's surprised to see her taking it so badly because she seemed to take it so well at the time. Mark then explains that she's having a delayed anger to the situation. He says that Derek has "broken up emotionally, but now needs to break up professionally." Soon Derek finds himself in the O.R. during an operation with Rose handing him the tools as usual. In an attempt to find out more about his teaching style, Erica Hahn asks him to explain why he switched from one size to another on his tools. Having no real good explanation he simply says, "I changed my mind." To this, Rose has a rather loud laugh and makes a snide comment about "changing his mind" causing all in the room to whisper around about the two. Derek was upset by this and confronts Rose after the surgery. He tells her that what she did was unacceptable and perhaps she needs to consider working in a different department. She tells him, "there's no easy way to tell you this, but I'm carrying your child. . ." He asks if she is serious and she says, "No." He is not impressed with the joke and again tells her they can't work together. She tells him he should change. He yells, "I am a neurosurgeon!" clearly establishing his importance. She storms off and says she's not changing. Meeting up with Derek in the hallway, Meredith asks Derek to move in with her. He says that he would love to, but she is obviously still a little nervous about the whole thing. She goes back to see her "happily married" patients and as their husbands arrive, Meredith realizes that things are not as perfect as they seem. One woman confesses that she's been having an affair with her best friend's husband for the last 8 months. Meredith starts to reconsider her decision to move in with Derek. She talks to him about it and Derek says he's willing to take baby steps if she needs to. He doesn't want to rush her into it. The two agree, though to try it out and Meredith is on board. She follows Cristina outside to talk to her about it. Cristina is so sick of hearing about it, she tells her to "shut up." Cristina tells her that the two won't work and will never work. She goes to storm back into the hospital and slips on some ice landing flat on her back. Meredith stands over her telling Cristina that she deserves it when a huge icicle falls and punctures Cristina's side. Meredith goes to help, but Major Hunt comes to her rescue. Back in the O.R. for another surgery, Derek again finds himself with Rose handing him all of the necessary tools. With obvious tension between them, he asks for the scalpel. Rose flips it over to put in his hand then realizes that she handed it to him blade first on "accident" cutting his open hand. He goes to get another pair of gloves to perform his surgery and throws an angry look at her saying that she better be more careful. Rose is in shock about what she has just done and goes quiet. Later on, Rose approaches Derek to apologize for what happened and tells him that there is an opening in neo-natals and she has taken it. She will no longer be working with him. After all is said and done, Derek goes to get his hand stitched up by Meredith. Mark Sloan offers to do it instead, but Derek says he'd rather have his girlfriend do it. "She gives me sex," he tells him. Meredith stitches him up and the two go home after a long day at work. At Meredith's house she is discussing with Cristina her fears again. Meredith needs to know if Cristina really meant what she said about she and Derek not being good together, that they won't make it together. Cristina asks why Meredith even cares what she thinks. Meredith explains that Cristina is her "person." What Cristina thinks really matters and she really needs her to support them even if she doesn't think it is going to work. Meredith asks her again if she thinks it will work and Cristina says that she'll support Meredith through anything. The last thing you see is Meredith helping Derek tape up boxes getting ready to move in together. more from this episode . . . |

The long-awaited encounter between Callie Torres and Erica Hahn happens, and then it's over before it began. Callie stars walking up to Chief Webber, then awkwardly glances at Erica Hahn before quicklly averting her eyes and walking away. Evidently the kiss was received with mixed emotions. Later the two bump into eachother in the hallway and Erica and Callie exchange banter on how "busy" they've been. Callie's been "studying" up in the library. Erica's been "studying, but on the internet." Obviously there is some tension between the two and they have not been speaking since we left them. It is soon evident that Callie's patient from the limo accident has had a spinal injury that has left him with no feeling in his legs. Derek Shepard makes it clear that the patient will never walk again. Our new arriver, Major Hunt, butts in and suggests they do a risky procedure where they freeze tha patient. Evidently it's been tested elsewhere but only with a young patient. Derek quickly shuts down the idea saying that it's too risky on a man in his sixties, like their patient. Still, Callie is intrigued and askes Hunt for more information once Derek leaves. She goes off to study some more about the procedure before she goes to pitcht he idea to Richard Webber. Richard who is on a mission to prove that they are not a #12 teaching hospital is quickly convinced to do the surgery. In the O.R. everything with Callie's patient starts out fine, Chief Webber and Miranda are there to support her through it. They start bringing the patient's temp down to freeze him, carefully trying to perform with the "knowledge" of Callie. Suddenly the patient is unstable and they look to Callie, "what did the research say?" but Callie is freaking out, she has no idea what to do or how to procede. She freezes up and is speechless at this critical time for the patient. They do what seems logical and call in Erica Hahn for consultation on the patient's heart. There is another wave of the patient being unstable and again, Callie freezes and has nothing to say. She doesn't know what to do and the patient may not make it. Erica turns to her, looks her straight in the eyes, and asks her calmly just to think about what the research says. Somehow, with Erica there to calm her, she is able to recall what to do, they get the patient stable and it looks like he's going to be okay. The end of the episode is hopeful as the patient wiggles his toes after waking from the procedure. Callie leaves Seattle Grace at the end of the shift to find Erica outside. She thanks Erica saying, "I don't experiment, but then you showed up and it was a success." An off-guard Erica takes a second before realizind that Callie is talking about the surgery not the kiss. Callie then starts rambling, as she does when shes nervous, ". . . I don't even like kissing girls. . . just kissing one girl-you." Erica feels a little more at ease with this, "I don't have anything to compare it with. You're the only girl I've ever kissed." The girls admit their struggles - Hahn and therapy, Torres and freaking out - and decide to "be scared together." The two leave together while joking about "being virgins" again.
When we left Izzie Stevens and Alex Karev, he was an emotional mess, begging for it after Ava left. Izzie was there for him. The two seem to be getting along together, almost flirting even. Izzie, who has been a wreck since Denny died is finding comfort in sharing loss with someone. Alex is telling Izzie that he is completely fine and she doesn't need to worry. He makes it clear that it isn't the same thing as her and Denny - Ava didn't die. Still, she's there for him. Somehow she's able to feel stronger knowing that she's not alone. Izzie talks with Meredith about "love" and Derek. She shares that Meredith shouldn't be so worried because there are really good men out there. She is the voice of reason telling Meredith that Derek is a "good man" and that fairy tales can come true. She loses herself for a second to say that Alex is a really good man too. Almost daydreaming about it, she pays him this compliment even if he is undeserving it. Meredith later runs into Alex Karev and tries to tease him a little about being an emotional deep guy even if he doesn't act it. Alex flips out and asks, "Did she tell youI cried." Meredith realizes he's upset and tries to back-peddle the situation. "No." He tells her that it's good she didn't because it didn't happen and he storm off. He goes to confront Izzie telling her, "You know what you did," while the confused Izzie puts together that it must have been Meredith. Now she's upset. Izzie goes off and finds Meredith just to tell her off, "I should have known, you only keep secrets for Cristina," before she storms off, too. The day is over and Izzie returns home only to find Alex with a half-naked woman in his bedroom making out. She turns her head to retreat and is caught up in a dream of her in the prom dress coming down the elevator to meet Denny. She is giddy and excited and in her dream, the elevator doors open and Denny is there waiting for her, smiling and welcoming. ---------------------------- Meanwhile, Lexie Grey is following George O'Malley around like a love-sick puppy. She is helping him study for the exams, backing him up on all his decisions and being his personal cheerleader during the whole episode, rallying him on in his efforts. Lexie is following Cristina and Meredith for rounds when she overhears that Meredith slept with George. She tries to butt in to get details, but is very quickly put back in her place by Cristina. Later, Lexie and George are helping Mark Sloan in a plastics surgery. When Mark casts a snide remark at George, Lexie quickly defends him and talks back to Sloan. As soon as George leaves, Mark teases Lexie about her "boyfriend." "He's not my boyfriend," she answers too quickly. "You wish he was," but she tries to deny it. Sloan knows and tells her that she should just tell George she likes him. She's to nervous. The three are soon in surgery together when Sloan tells Lexie, "Is there something you want to tell Dr. O'Malley." She turns every shade of red and dodges the question. George thinks that she must have slept with Sloan to be so defiant and frank with him, which she assures never happened. She gets the guts up to ask George about Meredith. He explains how he's made a lot of bad choices in the last year and how he tried to get her to like him for selfish reasons. Lexie starts to tell George about how she feels like they might be more than just roommates, but George cuts her off and says, "We are just roommates. . . you're the best friend I have right now." Looks like Lexie will have to be frustrated for a little longer. more from this episode . . . |
