Derek and Meredith Apart

derek shepard with rose episode 12

We open the episode with Meredith Grey sitting on the couch of the hospital psychologist-not saying a single word now for three sessions. She read somewhere that just the act of going to the therapist was helpful-even if you don't say anything. Seriously? Good luck with that, but it's not going to bring your McDreamy back to you! Meanwhile, Derek Shepard waltzes into the hospital with Rose who is absolutely beaming with pride in her man. (Gag me) She goes off to work and Derek is met by friend, Mark Sloan, who just doen't "get it." The sex must be amazing for him to be getting the back seat again. Then the truth comes out-they haven't even slept together yet (after 5 dates even) to which Derek defends Rose because she has "morals" and wants to wait until they're "serious." Why's Derek got to be so nice all the time. So patient and understanding, when all we really want is for him to go back to Meredith (where the sex is amazing by the way).

Meanwhile, Rose is absolutely head over heels for Derek. They have perfect little encounters in passing and cute little banter. It really makes you mad to see because she's just too nice-seems too perfect. She walks up to the nurses station where Lexie Grey is standing (plotting out the next thing she can steal) and with Derek freshly gone says, "Ah! Have you seen him? Have you seen his eyes? I'm trying to play it cool. I am playing it so, so cool. . . I LOVE HIM. . . Oh my {gosh}, I don't even know you. I didn't say that!" but of course she did say it and of course she says it in time for Meredith Grey to hear as she accidentally walks up on it all.

Mark admits to Derek later that he's jealous of the two. He's waiting for "his turn" with Derek so that they can be "men on the prowl" together. Is that too much to ask? Evidently so with Derek and his perpetual girlfriend dating. He's a serial monogamist. What can you say? Mark really needs someone these days and Derek actually doesn't seem completely sold on the deal with Rose. Besides, he's noticed that Meredith is avoiding him. You know those looks he gives her, those gentle longing looks-well, that's the look he gives her through the glass when she sends George to tell him about one of her patients who has a brain tumor. Meredith is obviously not over him. Mark whispers in her ear that he doesn't think Rose will last. She's obviously still trying to work on her "abandoment issues" and going to the therapist will hopefully help- that is if she ever actually speaks to the therapist. Finally, though at the end of the episode, she starts to open up to the therapist. I think she'll get there, she'll come around, and Derek better be available when she does. She also comes to Derek, strictly professionally, to offer an idea for starting a test group for saving lives of those with inoperable brain tumors like her patient's (see Episode 12 the Contest for more details). I'm proud of her for keeping it professional and it certainly appears to catch Derek a little off-guard. Of course, if he agrees, this will mean the two will be forced to spend some extra time together. In the mean time, watch out because Addison Shepard is paying a visit to Seattle Grace next week and she's heard that Derek is back on the market. She's sure to shake things up for us next week.
