Chyler was born on April 10, 1982 as Chyler Leigh Potts in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was raised in Virginia Beach and Miami, Florida. She began modeling in 8th grade which led to commercials before she was on a teen syndicate news show called "Hall Pass." Chyler never finished high school taking the California High School Proficiency Exam.

She married actor Nathan West, and now has 2 children with him. They met while working together on the set of 7th Heaven in 2000 both playing Mary Cambden's "troubled friends." Her son, Noah Wilde, was born in December of 2003, her daughter, Tailyn, was born in 2006.
