About Miranda Bailey

miranda bailey greys anatomy

Don't mess with Miranda Bailey. If there was ever anyone you didn't want to get on your bad side-it's her. When she says "Jump," others say "how high?" (Except for the new Dr. Hahn who doesn't seem to understand who Bailey is). It's was her job to make sure the interns did their jobs and there was no messing around with her. Miranda has a little boy named Tuck and is "happily" married (until recently). When she was in labor with Tuck, her husband was in neurosurgery. She was determined to wait for him, but there would have been danger to her baby if she waited any longer. George O'Malley helped her through the ordeal as an intern and even got behind her to help her push. Her son's middle name is George after him. Miranda doesn't mess around, she doesn't get involved in the love interests of everyone else and was the sure fit for the position as chief resident, but Callie Torres was given the position instead. This really upset Bailey, but Chief assured her it was because greater things were in store for her. She eventually got the position anyways as Callie couldn't handle the position while her marriage was falling apart. Bailey also started a free clinic (which everyone hates working in). It was funded by Isobel Stevens who inherited money from the love of her life, Denny, and was named after him. Most recently Bailey has been finding herself in a mess with her husband. He's been getting tired of her long hours, leaving him at home to take care of their son virtually alone. Tuck, her son, ended up in the ER after a bookcase fell on him which really rattled Bailey. She blames herself for forgetting to close the gate behind her. She was really upset, as well, when Erica Hahn refused to let her be in the room while they performed her son's surgery. (I wouldn't want to be on Bailey's bad side!) Despite the scare, Miranda's husband leaves her. Now she's juggling all her duties at Seattle Grace while taking care of son, Tuck, and making sure he's doing okay at daycare. She's being her usual strong self, but we know she's dying inside that her husband left her (she admitted to Addison Shepard on her last visit).   She's been working it out, looking at the "bigger picture" she calls it and is able to see it.  She lets the clinic go, gives it to Izzie Stevens to run for her.  Now she's going back to her husband to try again.

As much as she tries to stay out of the gossip, Miranda is brought into the 'know' about Callie and Erica's new relationship.  She does her best to give Callie some advice, but for the first time, she's at a loss.  She is, however, doing a great job of proving herself in surgery.  She successfully pulls off a "domino surgery" of kidney surgeries.  7 donors and 7 recipients all in one day.  Then she saves a 10-year old girl who was unsavable.  It is becoming clear that the Chief is intending for her to be his successor as Chief of Surgery and she is doing a good job proving that she is.  Still, she can't help but think that there is some sort of void in her work - something left to want and be excited for.  Things get more complicated when the new pediatric doctor Arizona Robins makes her uneasy with all her "new" ideas on a patient Bailey has had for a long time.  Chief reminds her that she is always skeptical of new doctors and she is forced to see that this new doctor, no matter how young, is better than she thought.

Bailey is working on a case of a ten-year-old boy who is dying and needs a transplant.  She is desperate to help this boy and there's nothing she can do because there isn't a donor match.  When she finds out that Derek's death row patient is a match to her dying patient, she does the unethical in order to try to save the boy.  She goes into the O.R. as Derek stands there with the man's brain exposed and tells him to stop.  The patient will be put to death in 5 days, it seems like such a waste of good organs that could save a life.  Derek puts down his tools and tells Bailey to decide.  He tells her that they took an oath, but if she is willing to break that oath, he'll stop.  If she really thinks that killing a man is justified, he'll let him die.  Bailey was already emotional when she entered the room, but breaks down even further at the thought.  She tells Derek to continue with his surgery.  The boy is able to get organs another way, just in time, but still Miranda can't believe what she almost did.
