| About Meredith Grey |
|
The one we all cheer on as Grey's fans. Meredith's mother was a surgeon at Seattle Grace and has always wanted Meredith to follow in her footsteps, so she did. . . . and she's good at it! She knows Richard Webber, the Chief of surgery, as he had an affair with Meredith's mother breaking up her parents marriage. She likes the Chief, though she has a hard time that he tries to protect her sometimes. After all, he is not her father. She is estranged from her real father, Thatcher Grey, as he was remarried and has another family. All attempts to bridge this gap have been fruitless. Meredith's mother had been residing at an elderly home with Alzheimer's, not even knowing her daughter any longer, until she passed away in season 3. Her step-mother was trying hard after Meredith's mother died, to bring the father and daughter together again. It got very complicated when she came to Meredith for help with her chronic hiccups. She died at Seattle Grace during routine surgery to solve the hiccups. Meredith's father blamed her and kept her from the funeral. Now Meredith's half-sister, Lexie Grey, is an intern at Seattle Grace-the last person in the world she wanted to meet or have to know. In addition to all this drama, Meredith almost drown herself off a dock last season, feeling overwhelmed by everything, but the staff at the hospital was able to revive her. Through it all, her closest friend is Cristina Yang. With all the drama she's experienced, it shouldn't be surprising that her love life has also been really rocky. She met Dr. McDreamy, Derek Shepard, at a bar and had fun until his wife, Addison, showed up. That's right, he was married! They broke up for a while as he tried to work things out with his wife, but eventually their love brought them back together. Since then, Meredith has had to deal with all of the above family issues and it's getting in the way. She "checks out" each time things get tough and has a hard time coping with everything. Having never had a father to trust or even show up, she also has a hard time trusting men. Derek is getting tired of waiting for Meredith to "be ready" to take the relationship to the next step. They broke it off, but were still having "break up sex" for a while. Then they started dating other people, or at least Derek was. Meredith is trying to be ready for him, but just can't (or won't). Derek has recently found someone new, a nurse named Rose in the hospital. Meredith finally realizes she needs help and turns to the hospital therapist to help her with all her problems. She's trying to get over Derek and ignore the fact that she still loves him. It's hard for her to open up, but they are starting to make some headway. Meanwhile, she's started a clinical trial with Derek as she thinks she's found a way to shrink and possibly cure brain tumors by injecting viruses in them. Finally, on their 13th trial, they see some success with their trial. In the process, she's grown a lot from her therapy and realizes that she can learn from her mother's mistakes and go to the man she loves. She goes to Derek's property and lays out candles like a floorplan of their house that she wants to share with him and tells him she wants to try again. Derek is still madly in love with her, and takes her back immediately, but first he's got to let Rose go. We return in Season 5 to a happy couple. Though Meredith is nervous and needs lots of reassuring, she's ready to try to take things to the next level with Derek. It takes a lot of strength, but she musters up the guts to ask Derek to move in with her. Now they're trying to make it work in Meredith's mother's house. . . with roommates. Together they are opening up her mother's past and clearing out her mother's study to give Derek more space in the house. Derek is soon finding, however, that Cristina Yang is starting to drive a wedge between them - she really needs her own love interest. On top of that, Meredith's old college friend, Sadie, has joined the interns at Seattle Grace. Meredith is trying to give attention to all of the important people in her life, but it's hard to juggle forever. At the hospital, she is starting to show growth. When Lexie comes to her after making the huge mistake of trying to do a surgery with the other interns, Meredith jumps right in with Cristina Yang and takes charge. She makes the right call to go to Miranda Bailey and Chief Webber right away. As Webber commends her and Cristina for their work, Lexie offers too much information and causes Cristina to come under fire. Cristina is upset that Meredith didn't come to her defense. Cristina loses the ability to be in the running for the coveted solo surgery coming up. Things quickly become worse between the friends when Chief gives Cristina Yang the power to decide who gets to do the solo surgery. Meredith thinks she's a shoe-in but when Cristina picks Alex Karev instead, she thinks it must be personal. It doesn't look good for their friendship. They're not talking, they're taking cheap shots at one another and Meredith knows she needs to make it right. Even Sadie points it out to Meredith citing the time they had a big argument and their relationship has never been the same. Sadie admits that she's a drifter and she could take it, but Meredith needs to make it right with Cristina. Derek puts in what he can to reiterate and even tries to help Meredith cope by dancing it out like Cristina would. Things get harder for Meredith when she has to meet Derek's mother. She's not the kind of girl that mothers like. She tries really hard to be "that girl" and for some reason puts her hair in a high ponytail with a pink scrunchee to show that, and she's smiling for her. While trying to do her best to put a good foot forward, she's got moral dillemmas about their prisoner patient. He is wrong on so many levels, but he's also wanting the doctors to let him die to put him out of the misery of the death penalty that lies ahead. He admits to her that he wants to donate his organs to a boy who is dying. Somehow she sees good in a man who is so bad, a man who slaughtered several women. She finally admits to Derek's mother that she is not the "happy" type, she's "dark and gloomy" and admits all that goes along with that. Derek's mother is quiet and thanks Meredith for meeting her before telling Derek that she's the one. She knows that Meredith is what Derek needs. The death row patient is asking to die to give his organs, and Meredith plants ideas in his head of ways that he could harm his exposed brain that has just been cut open. She further fascilitates by not paging Derek about his declining condition. Soon Yang thinks that Meredith must be up to something with this patient. She finds him in a dying state and the patient gets scared, asks to be helped. They page Derek and he is taken into surgery. He is upset that she did this and didn't come to him - it's unethical. He accuses her of just being manipulated by this horrible man. Still, when the man recovers and asks Meredith to be a familiar face in the crowd at his death, she can't resist going. She is very disturbed by the whole ordeal and when she leaves the prison after he's put to death, Derek is there outside waiting. She starts to explain that she was just trying to have "compassion," on this man in some way, but she is very disturbed by the whole thing. She begins crying - uncontrollably crying - and Derek doesn't know what else to do. He takes her to Cristina. Finally Cristina will go to her friend and be there for her despite their fighting.
