| About Cristina Yang |
|
Cristina is the smartest and probably most capable of all the interns that started together. She is a driven woman who knows what she wants-to be the next "cardio god." She is, however, lacking in the bedside manner a bit and struggles to see the point in caring about her patients. When you're this good, why would it matter if you care about your patients or not? The only one she really confides in is Meredith Grey and she struggles to let anyone else in at all. She's been dating Dr. Burke(the last cardio doc) for a long time and they were engaged to be married in season 3. After Burke had an accident, Cristina helped him hide his hand tremors. She helped perform all his surgeries and even performed some alone. Getting in over her head a little, she finally confesses the wrong-doing to the Chief. During the engagement, Burke also discovers that she's had a history of sleeping with men in power (as she slept with Colin Marlow, her professor and well-renowned heart surgeon). In this discovery and through meeting her ex, he comes to realize that Cristina has never really wanted to be married and may be just doing it to appease him. At the end of season 3, Cristina is left at the altar by Burke and the wedding is off. She could never know that she would never see him again. He quit Seattle Grace without telling anyone. She does have quite a run in with Mama Burke in Episode 2 (Season 4) which actually turns helps provide her with a little more closure on the whole thing. With the new cardio doctor, Erica Hahn, giving her a run for her money, Cristina is struggling to get back on top-now that she can't sleep her way there. She continues to try to help Meredith through all of her relationship issues (even if she's not good with relationships herself). Despite the efforts of others Cristina doesn't really like to get very chummy with anyone else. Most recently, Cristina has just gotten word that Dr. Preston Burke has won a prestigious award for his surgeries, leaving Cristina with many new reasons to be angry with him. Not only did he leave, but he didn't even mention her even though she helped him through so many of his surgeries over the last year while he was having hand tremors. She is now stuck with Dr. Hahn who won't let her do anything but watch surgery and she gets so upset, she finally spills it all out to Chief Richard Webber. He starts to notice how Hahn treats her and gives her a chance, defends her to Hahn, then gets mad at Hahn for not taking more opportunities to teach. Some advise that Cristina may need to take with her interns. Christina starts learning the hard way that she needs to be both a better learner and teacher. A new doctor turns her head, Major Hunt, and shows Cristina how tough real men can be. Cristina is turned on and when he helps her recover from being stabbed by an icicle, they have a moment where he kisses her. Her mystery army man, Owen Hunt, appears to be gone forever, but then she sees him at Joe's. The next day at Seattle Grace, there he is again. Evidently he was discharged from the military and asked on to their staff by Chief. At first she thinks he doesn't remember her, but soon realizes that he's just trying to make a new start. Try as she might, she just doesn't seem to do anything right in his eyes. Thinking she is cold to her patients, she finally tells him the story of why she became a doctor. When she was nine, she and her father were in a car accident. She, as a young child, tried to keep his chest closed while they waited for help. She actually felt his heart in her hands when it stopped. That's why she became a doctor. Still, Owen is unsure how to find his way in this new world of hospitals instead of the rough military style. After a particularly rough day, he ends up at Joe's sitting alone. Cristina follows him out into the alley when he leaves. He kisses her, but then pulls away. She leaves and he doesn't follow.
