Addison Shepard is the ex-wife of Derek Shepard ("McDreamy"). While Derek and Meredith Grey were dating, she showed up at the hospital. Meredith had no idea that Derek was married and Derek had no idea she was coming. She came from New York trying to get him back and joined the Seattle Grace team as their neonatal (baby) surgeon. The couple was broken up because Addison had cheated on Derek with his best friend, Mark Sloan ("McSteamy"). Upon her return, Derek tried to get things to work between them and temporarily stopped dating Meredith. It doesn't work out because Derek still has feelings for Meredith and I don't think he can really forgive her for cheating. In addition to it, they separate after a hard night and he finds her back with Mark Sloan (again). As with most times when people cheat, there were just other problems with the marriage and the two had grown distant. They lay the relationship to rest and Addison decides to leave Seattle Grace. She leaves to find solace in California with some old friends (which turns into the spin-off show "Private Practice").
